While many racegoers may choose to leave early to beat the traffic they will miss one of the highlights of the closing day of the 2024 Cheltenham Festival. The Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle is the traditional finale of the Festival, and the 23 strong field means it could be anyone’s race.
Run over two and a half miles, last year’s edition went to Iroko, who is running in the opening race today and has every chance, and as the race is for conditional jockeys only an extra element of the unknown is thrown in.
The leading horse in the betting is Quai De Bourbon, at 3/1 for Willie Mullins. A justified short price given overall form, it is one of only two from stable in this race.
However, we like the look of Waterford Whispers. Henry de Bromhead’s charge comes here in good form and looks the sort to take on a field like this, so we expect a strong showing.
An interesting each way runner is the 28/1 shot Teddy Blue, hailing from Gary Moore’s currently in-form stable. It all depends if he can keep his jumping tight and if so this one could spring a surprise.
There are many more horses with chances here, but the above are those we believe you should be considering as the 2024 Cheltenham Festival comes to a close.
